This month, we’re thrilled to award the Trover Travel Scholarship to Gary Burke!

Meet Gary Burke! His colorful cinematic photos reflect an appreciation of movies and video games, while in-depth travel insights capture the story behind his delightful discoveries. As an avid traveler, his home in New York City is a great jumping-off point for exploration. And as a toy photographer and enthusiast, there’s always a few action figures tucked in his bag, perfect for toy photography on-the-go! Gary emphasizes packing light for your travels—making the switch to a Sony A6300 mirrorless last year lightened his own camera bag. Along with a few personal tidbits and travel tips, we asked Gary to tell us about his favorite discoveries he’s shared on Trover. Take it away, Gary!

This month, we’re thrilled to award the Trover Travel Scholarship to Sandy Smith!

Meet Sandy Smith! This Chicago native is a prolific traveler who calls Nashville “home.” Now retired, Sandy is always up for an adventure! Frequently traveling stateside to visit family, she always makes time for her wanderlust, exploring cultural and historical sites that she’s discovered thanks to her fellow Trovers. A self-described “simple traveler,” she prefers to stay “in the moment” and travel light opting to capture moments on her iPhone and a small pocket-size Sony DSC-RX100M2 with a Carl Zeiss lens. When she’s not on the go, Sandy is active in her community, loves to sail, and hikes throughout central Tennessee. We asked Sandy to share a few of her favorite discoveries she’s shared on Trover over the years. Meet Jakub Bors! This explorer’s passion for our beautiful world is apparent in his vivid photography. He has no shortage of spectacular scenes to shoot near his home in Scotland’s incredible Isle of Skye. Finding freedom and inspiration in travel, Jakub combines thorough research with getting “purposely lost,” noting that it’s a “little bit of unplanned adventure that ends up being the best.” He doesn’t leave home without his camera gear, a Sony A7r ii with a 24-240mm F/3.5-6.3 lens. To share his love of photography and help feed his wanderlust, Jakub created Clever Photographer, where fellow shutterbugs can improve their skills through online-courses and photo tools. Meet Kirk & Lynn! These Bay Area adventurers work hard so they can spend their free time traveling. They love long weekends exploring their California stomping grounds and take two trips a year to explore far and wide. This team of Trovers capture travel moments on an iPhone 10 and their matching Canon EOS Rebel T7i’s. They recommend researching “the trip prior to traveling and plan your own personal adventure.” Beyond travel, Lynn is an antiquing aficionado and Kirk is the muscle for all those unique finds. Kirk’s specialty is landscape photography with a wide-angle lens, while Lynn likes to use zoom lenses for closeups and animal photos. Woman standing at grand canyonMeet Sofia Viertola, a.k.a Project Forever! This Finnish adventurer and nature lover works in a hospital while filling her vacations and long weekends with travel. In 2018, Sofia spent 4 months on a globe-trotting adventure checking 11 countries off her list. A self-described travelholic, Sofia loves exploring new places and getting to know different cultures. Sofia notes that “food is a great way to start to get to know a foreign country. . . cuisine is a big part of a region’s culture.” If she’s not on the road, Sofia gets her travel fix with books, travel shows & documentaries about nature and cuisine.  When on the go, she travels light with small cameras that fit inside my purse and are easy to carry around, currently opting for Olympus mirrorless cameras. Her secret travel tip is to “always smile and be respectful towards the locals, and you might benefit, too!” We asked Project Forever to tell us about her favorite experiences she’s shared on Trover.
