September 2017 Trover Travel Scholarship

We are inspired every day by the beautiful discoveries you share with us. To honor the vibrancy and value that each of you brings to Trover, we created the $500 Trover Travel Scholarship. Each month, we award it to one traveler who has particularly inspired us with their photos and stories.

This month, we’re thrilled to award the Trover Travel Scholarship to Sam Wibowo!

Who is Sam Wibowo? He’s a travel photographer and adventurer. We’d love Sam to tell you about himself and share a few photo tips. Take it away, Sam. . .

However, it wasn’t until about three years ago that I began exploring the world with a digital SLR camera—one that I almost returned to the store because of how complicated it seemed! I’m so glad I didn’t. Since then, I’ve learned many techniques for getting that great photo, and resources like Trover have helped me to find those amazing travel destinations, some iconic and some lesser-known.

I love the colors from a dramatic sky, so I’m often on the trails and at my destination just before the sun rises. Some call this time of day “ the blue hour”; I call it “chasing the light”. This is a great habit to get into if you want to avoid the crowds—especially at those popular destinations. What’s more, avoiding crowds allows me the freedom to find that perfect angle in which to frame my shot. I get excited when I can show some perspective in my landscape photography by finding something like wildlife or a tiny boat tethered to a dock that serves to anchor the shot, and that can be a challenge to do once the tour buses begin to arrive.

The awe-inspiring landscapes include a few of Sam’s favorite destinations he’s shared on Trover. (Left to right: Iceland, Yosemite National Park, the Great Wall of China, and Lake Louise).

If crowds are an issue for you, get adventurous and hike through, around, past, or up and over to a place that the typical sightseer wouldn’t think of getting to. Just be sure to first do your research so you have some awareness when it comes to environmental and safety concerns that may arise along your journey.

Communities like those found through Trover are a great place to begin your search. It truly has inspired me to seek out places I never would have imagined exploring, and I want to thank its many contributors for opening up the world to me a little bit more. It is my hope that I can continue the Trover tradition of motivating each other to travel beyond where we think is possible. This year, I look forward to sharing my upcoming travels to London, Slovenia, Austria, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, and, for the first time with a camera, my native Indonesia! Keep on chasing the light, Trover friends. I look forward to seeing more of the world through your lens.
