Born and raised in Germany, I earned a master’s degree in architecture from the Technical University of Berlin and the Tongji University in Shanghai. Wanderlust struck when I was 24, and my passion for photography grew simultaneously. So far I’ve visited around 50 countries on three continents. With each trip, I started to delve deeper into travel photography. Everything I know about it is self-taught.

Travel photography includes such a variety of genres. There are landscapes, people, architecture, food, wildlife…all of that has to be combined to really tell a story and hopefully transport the viewer to a destination.

Travel Pixelz shares a few of his favorite captures from a recent trip to Jordan, including Petra and the Wadi Rum Protected Area.

I love those iconic shots of landscapes and landmarks that have already been photographed a million times, but am equally interested in the tiny details that make each country and culture unique. Specializing in travel and landscape photography, I now work as a freelance photographer in Berlin, traveling the world whenever possible.

I’d like to share some of my favorite shots from a recent trip to Jordan. I visited Oman and the UAE last year and really liked the Middle Eastern mentality and hospitality. What attracted me to Jordan in the first place was definitely Petra. Having neighbors like Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Israel / the Palestinian Territories doesn’t make it easy to lure potential visitors to come over. Whenever one of Jordan’s neighbors is the topic in Western news, it isn’t exactly to point it out as an upcoming tourist destination.

An incredible country with great food, world-class sights, stunning landscapes and some of the friendliest and most hospitable and genuine people ever. I firmly believe that this is where travel photography can play a role and make a small but potentially important difference in representing a country and its culture. It certainly won’t wipe out prejudices, but maybe a photo inspires someone to visit a foreign country and experience a new culture first-hand instead of relying on disaster-focused media.

What we discovered was an awesome country which is often overlooked and whose tourist industry suffered severely from the political situation in the region. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful and safe place to visit and it has much more to offer than “just” the world wonder of Petra. I like visiting places misconceived by the general public. I prefer to experience things firsthand, and hopefully come back with nice stories and some good photos in order to spread the word and make people curious.
